Past seasons and performances of the Sanford Dole Ensemble
"All New -- All Local"
Saturday, February 4, 2012
8:00 pm
San Francisco Conservatory of Music
50 Oak Street, San Francisco
With “All New – All Local,” Sanford Dole Ensemble presents four works in a showcase of local composers that largely feature the work of Bay Area poets. There is one performance, Saturday, February 4, at 8:00 pm in the recital hall at San Francisco Conservatory of Music (50 Oak Street, San Francisco). Tickets are $30/general admission.
David Conte used a text by John Stirling Walker (the only non-local contributor) for "The Nine Muses." Mr. Conte was commissioned by the American Choral Director's Association to compose a work for premiere at the organization's annual conference in 2007, and it has not yet been heard in the Bay Area.
Sanford Dole is collaborating with librettist Brad Erickson on a work in progress for two sopranos, "Gertrude and Alice," about the lives of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.
"Waiting..." was written by Michael Kaulkin, setting several poems by Elisabeth Eliassen that comment on the many aspects of modern life that require one to wait.
Peter Scott Lewis has set three poems by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in "The Changing Light," which describe the diversity of California’s cityscapes and open space, blending natural wonder, cosmopolitan commerce, and unique neighborhoods that are sometimes bathed in sunshine, other times shrouded in fog.
The program is performed by a 16-voice mixed choral ensemble, accompanied by string quartet, piano four-hands and two percussionists.
Each work on the program is at least a Bay Area premiere (Kaulkin’s and Dole’s are world premieres). All of the composers and most of the poets will be present to speak about their creations, some of which were composed specifically with the forces of the Sanford Dole Ensemble in mind.
